I have my pfSense as an appliance, running a Intel 1.7GHz Dual-core Atom ( ! ) with 4GB RAM, it rarely goes over 5% with Squid/Squidguard/ntopng/two OpenVPN instances/snort/reporting. I bet it could run on an old P3 650MHz without trouble.

Pfsense seems to cutting the speed in half. Reading other users the SG-5100 works best with gigabit and has resolved these issues for others. I hope we can figure out what is causing the slow down. The only problem you might be encountering if is you have IPv6 enabled and have the bogons filter, the size of the Bogons filter can cause the Firewall rules not to load properly.
