Methods 1 & 2 above are correct. Do NOT dick around with method 3, IMHO. To create the folder (if it doesn't exist already) and open a Finder window: In the terminal sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/bin cd /usr/local/bin open . Why does Homebrew prefer I install to /usr/local? It’s easier /usr/local/bin is already in your PATH. It’s easier Tons of build scripts break if their dependencies aren’t in either /usr or /usr/local. We fix this for Homebrew formulae (although we don’t always test for it), but you’ll find that many RubyGems and Python setup scripts Apr 19, 2018 · 2018-04-17T22:57:18.020349Z 0 [Warning] Could not increase number of max_open_files to more than 32768 (request: 32929) 2018-04-17T22:57:18.020567Z 0 [Warning] Changed limits: table_open_cache: 16303 (requested 16384) 2018-04-17T22:57:18.181213Z 0 [Note] /usr/local/libexec/mysqld (mysqld 5.7.21-20-log) starting as process 36792 /usr/local/libexec/mysqld: Undefined symbol "fdatasync" At present I have no explanation of why users end up with /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin in their PATH, and root gets the others. (Frankly, the ordering of the root PATH seems very odd, given that /usr/local/sbin and /usr/sbin should be at the end, according to /etc/profile.)

Most of the time /usr/local is used for installing software/data that are not part of the standard operating system distribution (in such case, /usr would only contain software/data that are part of the standard operating system distribution). It is possible that the FHS standard may in the future be changed to reflect this de facto convention.
